The Scuttler seems to be a wingless larval form of the Buzzer (q.v.) life cycle. It can scuttle at high speed and jump with the power of a flea. They seem to be born with the instinct to hurl themselves at potential enemies of the swarm, but their soft, juvenile bodies are extremely brittle, and they will do far more damage to themselves than their 'victim'.

Worker buzzers are the weaker half of a species of insect-like creatures, foul, bloated bodies that hover on thin, papery wings. Our best guess is that they exist to carry out menial fetch-and-carry tasks within a larger organisation of horrors. Their first instinct when threatened is to launch themselves at the offender, inflicting a sting not unlike that of a bee, albeit made many times more traumatic by its significantly larger size. Also like a bee, this results in immediate death for the Worker.

Soldier Buzzers are the larger, tougher equivalents to Worker Buzzer, existing purely for defense, and emit a lower buzz. They are as aggressive as their smaller brethren, but are capable of delivering stings without harm to themselves, and have been known to hound targets relentlessly. Both Buzzers move by launching themselves through the air in spasmodic little jaunts, and pause for a moment to compose themselves; this is a prime opportunity to strike.

The creature termed the Floater, while manifesting in our universe, seems to be simultaneously tied to another, where physics operate differently. All conventional tests indicate that it is a ball of gas, and yet, it seems to be heavy and unyielding, and capable of giving foes a nasty scrape as it moves past. It is a slow-moving creature, if it even is a 'creature' in the conventional sense of the word, but when physically threatened will divide its mass in two, with both halves attacking independantly with speed and aggression. Gunning them down requires good aim; beating them off at close range requires good timing.

It is unclear whether the Morass is a single entity, or several smaller ones clustered together. What is clear that it is a huge, disorganised mass of gelatinous tissue and half-digested parts from creatures it has absorbed. The Morass' sluggish movement suggests that it is unsuited to environments we consider normal, and may originate from aquatic or low-gravity worlds. Do not underestimate the danger. It only needs to touch you to start digesting you, and when prey is nearby, it can emit clouds of noxious gas by quickly tightening and untightening its mass. When it does not sense prey in the immediate vicinity, it extends an eye-like organ from its top, with which it briefly observes the surrounding area. The Morass can be pacified faster by focusing damage upon the 'eye'.

The Ancients are not entirely forgotten by this world. There are, among humans, deranged cultists who have prepared for their return in secret before record-keeping began. They have sacrificed their sanity for power, and have an almost instinctive grasp of rune incentation, using their god's wicked magic to shield themselves from harm and fire death-dealing offensive spells. However, their magic is base and second-hand, and a rival magic user can easily dispel their efforts by incanting their own mantras back at them. This wil cancel out all magical effects, leaving the (often physically frail) cultist utterly defenseless.

With the weakening of the barriers between worlds, restless spirits of the dead have returned to the corporeal realm, utterly mindless and deeply envious of the living. Some of the cults that worship the Ancients have made attempts to harness ghosts and use them as guardians for places and objects they wish to protect, but the ghosts' utter lack of reasoning or instruction-following skills makes this an inexact science at best. Ghosts are fairly easily dissuaded temporarily with a small amount of physical violence, but they cannot be killed a second time, thy will always return to harass you further until you either leave their chosen territory or join the ranks of the dead. While ghosts represent a reduced physical threat, they can have a significant impact on one's sanity.

The Fat Man is a creature of above-average intelligence that seeks to imitate human beings. Like many of its fellows it is technically amorphous, but it chooses to adopt a humanoid form and dress in human clothes, all the while making a constant throat sound not dissimilar to human sniggering. This could be an attempt at espionage, or perhaps it merely envies human society. Whatever the case, the Fat Man is astonishingly tough. It shows no discomfort even after multiple gunshots, and when it gets close, it delivers fast, unexpected jabs that can devastate a human victim. It also pursues foes with the relentlessness of a hunting dog. The best advice is to save your ammunition and simply flee.

The Overseer is one of the more surreal creatures encountered since the coming of the shadow. Physically, it seems to be vast, large enough to fill a room, and for reasons best known to itself, it wears the appearance of a gigantic human face. One guess is that it is an amorphous being taking a shape that it thinks will disorient its victims, but this does not explain why it recoils in pain when shot directly in the 'eyes'. It has even been suggested that the Overseer is not physically there at all, but some kind of shared hallucination without physical presence. This is supported by stories of Overseer victims later being found physically intact, but for injuries inflicted upon themselves during periods of raving madness. The only confirmed fact about the Overseer is that it should be avoided at all costs.

Urban legend speaks of an impossibly tall, thin humanoid, that snatches away the overly curious and the children who did not heed stories of the bogeyman. There are also stories from certain less reliable Ministry of Occultism sources relating to a 'Tall Man', a bloodthirsty lich in contract to an ancient god. Whatever connection may exist between these accounts is less important than the following advice: if your electronic equipment begins to malfunction, and you catch a glimpse of scrawny limbs moving ponderously towards you, then run. Do not look back.

There are few indeed who could claim to have personally faced an Ancient and lived, still fewer who escaped with their mind intact. Accounts exist of strange, illogical dimensions where a 'wall of darkness, like an immeasurable hole in reality' seeks to envelope intruders. Accounts indicate that some ungodly voice in the darkness chants incantations, and that the darkness can be temporarily fended off with the apropriate counter-incantations. Do not humour for an instant the possibility of killing a being so utterly incomprehensible; the most you can do is push it away. But push it far enough and an opportunity to escape may present itself.

Revision as of 13:19, 13 December 2016

Monsters are enemies found in The Consuming Shadow. They usually spawn in dungeons, though can also be found on the side of the road through random events or jobs. Every enemy has different properties, behaviors and ways of harming the player that make them different, with some enemies being more threatening than others.

There are three types of enemies: monsters, hunter monsters and bosses, the latter of which there is only one, the Ancient. All normal monsters can be killed, and two of the four hunter monsters can also be killed.
